HOPE is Still Alive and Well…
There is still and always must be HOPE...
Yesterday was challenging. We saw the dictator-in-chief on day one (of 1460, but who's counting?) preening around like he just took over the North Korean military and going on about our country, which is in exponentially better condition than when he left office four years ago, as if it is a hellscape. The performative cruelty of the executive decrees was meant to shock, entertain and overwhelm, and of course is already being challenged in courts. Set that against the service being done to honor the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, the remembrances of him and his bold and wise words being quoted across the country. The best of humanity vs the worst of humanity. Yes, it was a challenging day.
But at the end of that day, we still have hope. We woke up with work to do, and we went to sleep with work to do. This country was founded on the principle of forming "a more perfect union," and that sounds like a goal, not a place. In order to fulfill that aspiration, we have to constantly be in action, and in order to be in action, we must have Hope. We weren't perfect under President Biden, and we won't be any time soon. But there is Hope and there is Work to do to make that hope reality.
We have an opportunity to put our hope into action! In conjunction with Texas Impact, a nonpartisan, interfaith organization with a mission to impact legislation in Texas, we will be writing postcards to our state representatives in the House and Senate. This effort is intended to support legislation that creates greater clarity and give doctors the freedom to treat pregnant women when their life is threatened. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick recently said that Texas should clarify the abortion ban, so we see this as an opening to help correct this harmful law. We need to send 250 postcards in the next few days. Tomorrow night we'll be meeting back at Brass Tap at Hillcrest and Arapaho to gather with democracy-minded folks and put our hope into action! REGISTER FOR DETAILS!
We have our annual members meeting coming up January 28th. This meeting is for Patron Members, those who have donated to RAD in the past 12 months. If you have not renewed or want to become a Patron Member, please join now! We will be voting on Board Members and will get a treasurers report from 2024, as well as plans for 2025. The work we are doing is important and impactful, especially on the local level, where we have municipal and school board elections coming up this year! All who join or renew by January 15th will be included in this meeting. We welcome your input as this is YOUR club!
We have a new RAD t-shirt for 2025 as well! You can order yours for $30 or get a t-shirt and membership for $50. T-shirts will be available at our NEXT in-person meetings or can be shipped. Our t-shirt design is an homage to Jimmy Carter, who said, "We become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams." We'll also have bumper stickers!
