If Only “Madame President” were a reality…
Inspiration is hard to come by these days ~
I try to send this newsletter out weekly, but the constant barrage of insanity from both our state capitol as well as D.C. really often leaves me speechless. I quote Beto all the time - that "action is the antidote to despair" - and I try to live it. Still, the minute I sit down to exhort you all to keep showing up, words leave me and I sit here staring at the blank page. So I'm going to just jump to the "news" and hope you are all staying with us ... because we ARE in ACTION!
We have a RAD Volunteer Fair this Saturday, the 8th! We have for years been asking how you want to contribute and from time to time we find a way to put you to work. But creating the teams and organizing how they'll do the work is a level we just haven't gotten to... until now! Saturday we are meeting at La Casita Bakeshop from 4-6 and will introduce you to the teams that are available. Now you have opportunities to volunteer with Membership Outreach, Legislative Action, Campaign Coordination, Election Work, and Creative / Social Media Work! Please sign up if you haven't already. We're looking forward to plugging you in and kicking our organizing efforts into the next gear!
Our RAD Happy Hour is Thursday, March 20th! In honor of Women's History Month, we will be celebrating women with a panel of local activists who'll talk with us about how they integrate their activism into their daily lives. Jenna Royal will moderate the conversation with Joey Cade (the FEDDS!), Kathleen Thompson (Progress Texas!), and our own Destiny de la Rosa (New Wave Feminists!)! Jenna herself has been balancing her own nonprofits, activism, her law practice and being a mom/wife for years. Please plan to come and be a part of the conversation! Sign up here for all the details!
RAD is hosting a municipal Candidate Forum March 25th, from 7:00- 8:30. This year we will be focusing on two contested City Council races - Mayoral and Place 6, as well as District 2 of the RISD Board of Trustees. Mark your calendar and look for your invite soon!
Peaceful, non-violent protest has been the most consistent way throughout history of making change. There will be a Stand Up for Science Rally in downtown Dallas on March 7 at Klyde Warren Park from 4-7. March 8th, there's an International Women's Day March & Rally at 2 p.m. at Civic Garden downtown. The Tesla dealership in Plano on the 15th of March will be the closest Elon protest! On March 30th, Sunday afternoon, there will be a Super Mega Marcha 2025 that you will want to be involved in! This will be a coalition of immigrant communities who are fighting for bipartisan immigration reform. You don't have to do it all, but if you want to be a part of this kind of resistance, there are plenty of options this month!! (Reply to this email if you know of others that I should include!)
The NAACP Richardson unit will be meeting soon! We'll let you know when that happens, as a good percentage of the original members were from RAD! We are very happy to see this coming to pass and will be happy to collaborate with and support their much needed efforts locally.
Don't miss your chance to get the RAD t-shirt for 2025! You can order yours for $30 or get a t-shirt and membership for $50. T-shirts will be available at our NEXT in-person meetings or can be shipped. Our t-shirt design is an homage to Jimmy Carter, who said, "We become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams."
